FUNGICIDES: THE FUNGUS & YEAST KILLERS

There are a number of herbal/botanical remedies having both modern scientific support as well as historical support for their therapeutic powers against fungus, yeast, bacteria and parasites. A list of the more prominent antifungal and antibacterial remedies includes BERBERINE, GOLDENSEAL (a source of Berberine), CAPRYLIC ACID, OIL OF OREGANO, BLACK WALNUT, CAT'S CLAW, PAU D'ARCO, GARLIC, and OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT

The following list is derive from one of the medical diagnostic labs listed on our DIAGNOSTIC LAB TESTS. In routine processing of stool specimens, both bacteria and yeast are cultured and tested for sensitivity against a standard array of prescription medications and homeopathic agents. Test results indicate the sensitivity of the pathogen to each of these agents, with the results being reported as "Sensitive", "Intermediate", or "Resistant". The specific agents being tested against are shown in the following table.

Even though the above tests for "Natural Agents" have not been approved by the FDA, it is obvious that the efficacy of Naturopathic remedies has attracted sufficient attention to justify the standardized professional testing of these agents.

In addition to these several natural agents that are tested for by this lab, the natural agents of Garlic, Olive Leaf Extract, and Pau D'Arco are widely used by healthcare providers to treat Candidiasis. Following are two quotes from Dr. Crook, MD, internationally regarded as one of the originators of Candida overgrowth treatment. "Garlic: According to a research report from Loma Linda University, garlic extract strengthens the immune system by helping the body's white blood cells gobble up enemy germs." "Olive Leaf Extract: I obtained information about this natural product from ….[Ed. We omit the names of several pharmacists.] These pharmacists told me that a number of health professionals have found that olive leaf extract helps people with viral infections and yeast-related problems."

Beyond the sources listed here, there are many other reputable sources that document the efficacy of these natural agents for the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections. For example, the well-regarded HealthNotes offers this description of garlic: "Garlic has demonstrated significant antifungal activity against C. albicans in both animal and test tube studies.17 18 19 Greater anti-Candida activity has resulted from exposing Candida to garlic than to nystatin — the most common prescription drug used to fight Candida.20 No clinical studies of garlic in the treatment of candidiasis have yet been conducted. However, some doctors suggest an intake equal to approximately one clove (4 grams) of fresh garlic per day; this would equal consumption of a garlic tablet that provides a total allicin potential of 4,000 to 5,000 mcg." (The numbers interspersed in the text refer to footnotes which cite scientific studies published in major journals.)
